Protection Policies — Explained

What are Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs)?

An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a confidential support service that helps employees deal with personal or work-related issues that may be affecting their health, wellbeing or performance. Although EAPs are often included alongside workplace benefits, they are also available as standalone services, allowing businesses to provide professional wellbeing support without purchasing private medical insurance.

EAPs offer employees and, in many cases, their immediate family members access to qualified professionals who can provide practical advice, emotional support and guidance across a wide range of everyday challenges.

WHAT IS IT?

Employee Assistance Programmes at a glance

An Employee Assistance Programme gives employees access to confidential support whenever they need it, usually through a 24-hour telephone helpline, online services or virtual counselling sessions. Depending on the provider, employees may also have access to structured counselling, legal guidance, financial advice and a wide range of wellbeing resources.

EAPs are designed to provide early intervention, helping employees address issues before they begin to affect their mental health, attendance or performance at work. Because the service is completely confidential, employees can seek support knowing their employer will not receive details about the conversations they have.

As a standalone employee benefit, an EAP provides businesses with an affordable way to support employee wellbeing while promoting a healthier, more productive workplace.

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

An Employee Assistance Programme gives employees free, confidential access to professional advice and emotional support whenever they need help with personal, financial, legal or workplace issues.

How it fits into your employee benefits

Employee Assistance Programmes can be provided as a standalone employee benefit or alongside wider workplace healthcare solutions such as private medical insurance or health cash plans.

Because they focus on wellbeing, early intervention and everyday support, EAPs can complement other employee benefits by giving staff somewhere to turn before issues develop into more serious health or workplace concerns.
