Business Medical Insurance — Explained

What is travel cover as a business health insurance add-on?

Travel cover is an optional benefit available through select business health insurance policies that extends some or all of a group policy's medical cover to employees who travel or work outside the United Kingdom.

It is not offered by all PMI providers, and where it is available the scope, geographic reach, and conditions attached vary considerably — making it one of the more complex optional extras to compare on a like-for-like basis.

WHAT IS IT?

Travel cover at a glance

Standard business health insurance is designed to provide cover for medical treatment within the United Kingdom. Without a specific travel extension, the policy will not respond to medical costs incurred abroad — leaving employees reliant on travel insurance or the healthcare system of the country they are visiting.

A travel cover add-on changes this by extending the group policy to provide access to private medical treatment overseas. The level of cover available, the countries and regions included, and the duration of trips that can be covered under the extension all depend on the insurer and the specific terms of the policy.

Travel cover available through a PMI policy is typically focused on emergency and acute medical treatment rather than routine care. It is designed to ensure that an employee who falls ill or is injured while travelling for work can access appropriate private medical care without facing significant out-of-pocket costs — and without the limitations that can come with standard travel insurance when serious medical treatment is required.

Because this benefit is only offered by a limited number of PMI providers, and the terms attached to it vary significantly, it is worth discussing your workforce's travel requirements with an adviser before assuming this can be added to an existing policy or that cover will be equivalent across providers.

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Travel cover extends your business health insurance so that employees are covered for private medical treatment when travelling or working abroad. Not all PMI providers offer it, and the scope of cover — including which countries are included and for how long — varies between those that do.

How it fits into your policy

Travel cover sits as an optional extension to the core group policy rather than a standalone product. Where it is available, it is typically added at the group level — meaning all employees covered under the policy benefit from the extension rather than it being selected on an individual basis.

For businesses with employees who travel regularly for work, or who are based overseas for extended periods, this type of extension can provide a meaningful level of protection. It ensures continuity of cover for employees away from the UK without the need to arrange separate travel insurance policies for each trip or individual.

It is important to understand that PMI-linked travel cover and standard travel insurance are different products serving different purposes. Standard travel insurance is designed primarily around trip cancellation, lost luggage, and short-term emergency medical costs. PMI-linked travel cover is focused on providing access to private medical treatment in line with the employee's existing health insurance — which can be particularly valuable for longer trips or where more significant medical care is required.

Businesses should review both the geographic scope and the duration limits of any travel extension carefully, particularly where employees travel to destinations with high private healthcare costs or where access to quality NHS-equivalent care is limited.
