What is an Employee Assistance Programme?

An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a confidential support service available to employees that provides access to practical guidance and professional help across a range of personal and work-related challenges.

EAPs are typically included as part of a business health insurance policy or available as a standalone employee benefit, and are designed to give employees somewhere to turn when they are dealing with issues that affect their wellbeing, performance, or ability to work.

An EAP gives employees access to a range of support services — usually available around the clock — through a dedicated helpline, online platform, or app. The service is confidential, meaning employees can seek help without their employer being informed of the nature of their enquiry.

Support typically spans mental health and emotional wellbeing, legal and financial guidance, and practical life management advice. Depending on the provider, employees may also be able to access a limited number of structured counselling sessions through the EAP, either by telephone or face-to-face.

EAPs are designed to provide early intervention — helping employees manage difficulties before they escalate into absence, long-term ill health, or reduced performance. For this reason, they are increasingly recognised as a meaningful part of a business health insurance package rather than a peripheral add-on.

The service is made available to all eligible employees under the group policy, and in many cases extends to their immediate household members as well, depending on the provider and the level of benefit included.
